Koko is named after the gorilla that was taught sign language by Dr. Francine “Penny” Patterson starting in 1972.
Koko reportedly learned over 1,000 signs. She also understood spoken English, with comprehension of around 2,000 words.
Jane Goodall, known for her work with chimpanzees, visited Koko and even asked her questions about chimpanzee behavior!
